Picture Your Best Self: A Guide to Prepping for Your Portrait Session
We’ve all been there - standing in front of a mirror, agonising over how to present ourselves for an important meeting or event. Being photographed is no different. Whether you’re a seasoned professional, an upcoming artist, or starting your dream business, ensuring that your portraits resonate with your personal or professional brand is paramount.
However, being photographed can be exhilirating and nerve-wracking at the same time. Not all of us (me included!) are comfortable with having our pictures taken. And preparing for your portrait session can be overwhelming.
But it doesn’t have to be!
I have curated a short and simple guide, with tips that have been tried and tested over many shoots, to help you look your best for your portrait session. My hope is that these pointers will help you get pictures that are not only visually striking but are also authentic reflections of you!
What should you wear?
Something as simple as a well-fitting and well-pressed outfit can do wonders, and you’ll have a portrait you can’t wait to show off! So, choose an outfit that you feel confident and comfortable in.
Choose colors that complement your skin tone. I have usually found that white or black work only in certain planned situations. When in doubt, pastels are usually a good choice!
Patterns and textures demand a lot of attention from a viewer. To ensure that what you’re wearing isn’t too distracting, opt for solid colours or subtle patterns.
Accessories
Opt for simple, timeless accessories that won’t distract from your face. If possible, avoid wearing overly shiny or reflective jewellery. If you do need to wear something that’s important to you or your brand, prioritise that over other accessories. You can also keep a personal item handy, in case you want to incorporate it into the picture - your favourite mug, the planner that keeps you sane, or a tool of your trade. I recommend this as it’s usually easier to pose for a picture with something you’re familiar with!
General Tips
Remember that a portrait session could get hot! Having some facial tissues/blotting paper/a simple handkerchief handy will help you keep your face looking nice and fresh.
Try to change into your outfit after you get to the shoot location, to avoid creasing or sweat patches.
If you’re planning on wearing makeup, avoid products with SPF as it can reflect light oddly in photos.
Finally, how much rest you get the previous day shows! Try to get a good night’s sleep, and drink plenty of water so you look well-rested and fresh.
